In the fall of 2013, the Government of Canada moved the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) from the Agriculture portfolio to the Ministry of Health. The Safe Food for Canadians Act received Royal Assent in November 2012 and strives to simplify and consolidate the authorities under previous acts regulating food. Implementing regulations are currently being drafted with significant input from stakeholders in the hopes of minimizing trade disruptions. The Regulatory Cooperation Council and the Beyond the Border Initiative continue as successful platforms to advance bilateral issues on security, trade, and economic competitiveness.
