Production of oilseeds and products is trending upwards in Nigeria but domestic supply still lags behind growing demand. Demand is growing from both the poultry and the food processing industries. Palm oil/palm kernel oil and soybean oil are the dominant supply sources contributing approximately 70 percent and 25 percent of the country’s National Consumption Requirement (NCR), respectively. According to industry sources, local production reached 1.8 million tons per year, about 600,000 tons (about 25 percent) short of the NCR in 2013.
