AQUACULTURE AND SUSTAINABILITY IN CHINA Report 2011
China is an important country in various respects. In economic respect, regarding international relations, in environmental respect, China is of indubitable importance. Today, marine biodiversity and fish stocks all around the world are considered to be under threat. How does China’s fishery and aquaculture look like and how does China face the degrading marine biodiversity and the declining fish stocks? And furthermore, what can various actors, such as Chinese as well as Dutch government, NGOs, business etc. do? That were the initial
questions for beginning this project. A choice is made for a focus on sustainability in Chinese aquaculture, and its real and potential threats to marine biodiversity and ecological environment.
In the project, attention is paid to various aspects of the aquaculture industry in China. It gives a general overview of aquaculture production, but also of the feed supply for aquaculture in China. The ecological and environmental sustainability of aquaculture in China is discussed.
However sustainability can be understood in many ways, included in this discussion is threat to marine biodiversity, but not energy use. No quantitative analysis have been done.
