Prepared at the 17th JECFA (1973), published in FNP 4 (1978) and in FNP 52 (1992). Metals and arsenic specifications revised at the 55th JECFA
(2000). A group ADI of 0-25 mg/kg bw as the sum of sorbitan esters of lauric, oleic, palmitic and stearic acids was established at the 26th JECFA

DEFINITION A mixture of the partial esters of sorbitol and its mono- and dianhydrides with edible stearic acid

Assay Saponification of 100 g of the sample yields approximately 31.5 g of polyols and 73 g of fatty acid. The polyol content shall be not less than 95% of a mixture of sorbitol, 1,4-sorbitan and isosorbide
