On June 7, 2013, The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) published Food Safety and Standards (Packaging and Labeling) Amendment Regulations, 2013. Although not notified to WTO, the notification providing the amended regulations was posted on the FSSAI website on August 20, 2013. The amendment relates to Chapter two of the Food Safety and Standards (Packaging and Labeling) Regulations, 2011 and requires a mandatory display of the ‘license number’ along with the FSSAI monogram in the principal display panel of food package consignments. This requirement is added with a proviso that existing packaging material could be used until the publication of the final Food Safety and Standards (Packaging and Labeling) Amendment Regulations, 2013. After the final publication date, manufacturers will have six months to comply with the new regulation until it is enforced on all applicable products.
