Since Bulgaria’s accession to the EU in 2007, the interest towards organic farming has grown considerably. The driver behind this interest is improved export demand, mainly to the EU market, as well as good production subsidies, and favorable governmental policy. However, as of today, the land under organic farming is 0.8 percent of all utilized agricultural land and organic food sales are below 1.0 percent of total food sales due to lower purchasing power of local consumers.
