TRADE SUMMARY
In the fish and seafood market, France is the fourth-largest importer in the world with US$6.5 billion in 2011, an increase of 10.5% from 2010. Top suppliers were Norway (11.7%), the
United Kingdom (9.0%), Spain (7.3%), the United States (4.8%) and the Netherlands (4.5%). France's supply is very diversified, importing fish and seafood from more than 124 countries.
France's main fish and seafood imports include frozen fish fillets(US$916 million), frozen shrimp and prawns (US$735 million), fresh salmon (US$706 million), canned tuna (US$554 million), and other fish, excluding fillets (US$441 million).
France was a net importer of fish and seafood in 2011, exporting just over US$1.7 billion, an increase of 7.3% from the previous year. Most of France's exports were comprised of frozen fish with bones (US$274 million), fresh fish fillets excluding steaks (US$97 million), prepared fish (US$87 million), live cuttlefish and squid (US$79 million), and smoked salmon (US$77 million). Top export destinations in 2011 included Italy (21.6%), Spain (17.7%), and Belgium (12.8%).
