The first foreign quick service and casual dining restaurant brands entered the Indian market nearly 20 years ago. At the time, Indians rarely ate out and many wondered how the restaurants would overcome supply chain challenges and opposition to foreign investment. There are now an estimated 52 foreign restaurant brands (up from 43 a year ago) operating 2,500 outlets across India. The number of homegrown chains is also rising as Indian firmsadopt franchising or chain models to meet growing consumer demand for the dining-out experience.
