Introduction

The JAS Standards for the production methods are called “Specific JAS Standards.”

As of March 2006, there are Specific JAS Standards in the following categories:

a) a) Meat Products (Matured hams, sausages and bacons);

b) b) Naturally Grown Chicken (Jidoriniku);

c) c) Organic Foods;

d)d)  Products with Production Information.

Organic Foods

The JAS Standards for organic plants and organic processed foods of plant origin were established in 2000 on the basis with the Guidelines for the Production, Processing, Labelling and Marketing of Organically Produced Foods which were adopted by the Codex Alimentarius Commission.

The organic JAS system has been further developed with the addition of the JAS Standards for organic livestock products, organic processed foods of animal origin and organic feeds which took effect in November 2005.

Operators certified by registered Japanese or overseas certifying bodies are able to attach the organic JAS logo to products that were produced or manufactured in accordance with relevant organic JAS Standards.

JAS with Production Information

Due to the outbreaks of BSE and false labeling cases in recent years, consumers came to have anxiety on food safety and distrust on food labeling. In order to address the issues, restoring consumer confidence in foods is a matter of our highest priority.

As a new approach to secure the transparency and tractability on production and distribution information from farms to consumers, a new type of Specific JAS Standard with Production Information was established in 2003. The validity of production information is certified by Registered Certifying Bodies.

As of March 2006, there are three Standards with Production Information for beef, pork and agricultural products. New Standards are to be established depending on demands from consumers and producers
