Separation of Unsaponifiable Matter
A. Reagents(a) Concentrated potassium hydroxide solution.—Dissolve 60 g KOH in 40 mL H2O.
(b) Dilute potassium hydroxide solution.—Dissolve 10 g KOH in 1 L H2O.
(c) Ether.—USP or ACS, peroxide-free. Test immediately before use.
(d) Dried ether.—Immediately before use, shake peroxide-free ether with anhydrous CaCl2 equal to 10% of the volume of the ether, and filter.
(e) Anhydrous sodium sulfate.—Powder to pass No. 60 sieve.
B. Apparatus
(a) Separators.—One 250 mL and one 500 mL. Wash separators free of grease. Must be ether-tight when lubricated only with H2O.
(b) Filtration bell jar.—Large enough to hold 300 mL Erlenmeyer and provided with air-leak valve to control vacuum.
(c) Fritted glass filter.—Fine porosity.
