Real Maple Syrup-AMERICAN EATING TRENDS REPORT 2012
CONSUMPTION DEMOGRAPHICS
The percentage of Americans who regularly consume real maple syrup more than doubled in five years, from 2.5% in 2005 to 6.4% in 2010.
Amongst those that do consume maple syrup, this product is eaten about once a week.
However, according to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), overall consumption of all-natural edible syrups, which includes real maple syrup, has remained virtually unchanged in the last decade (2011).
Because of its premium positioning, real maple syrup is subject to reduced consumption during economic downturns (Mintel, 2010).
Furthermore, not all consumers are cognizant of the differences between real maple syrup and processed maple-flavoured syrup (Mintel, 2010).
