Introduction
AOAC Official Method 940.06 Methanol in Cordials and Liqueurs
First Action 1940
Final Action
Surplus 1994
Measure test portion containing 20–25 mL absolute alcohol into distilling flask, add enough H2O to make total ca 100 mL, and distil, collecting ca 50 mL distillate. To distillate add 4 g NaCl for each 10 mL H2O and let stand several h for complete saturation. Transfer to separator, using ca 10 mL saturated NaCl solution to wash out container, and shake with 25 mL petroleum ether. When separation is complete, transfer aqueous solution to second separator containing 25 mL petroleum ether; shake, and transfer aqueous solution to third separator, also containing 25 mL petroleum ether; shake, and when separation is complete, drain aqueous solution into 200 mL distilling flask. Meanwhile add 25 mL saturated NaCl solution to first separator and follow test portion through with this solution, finally adding washings to test portion solution in distilling flask. Repeat this operation with second 25 mL portion saturated NaCl solution, finally adding this also to distilling flask. Distil mixture into 50 mL volumetric flask, using suitable adapter. After 48–49 mL distils, disconnect apparatus, fill flask to mark with H2O,mix, and determine methanol as in 958.04D (see 26.1.34) or 905.01
(see 26.1.35).
